The Stories We Tell: How Words Shape Our Relationship with Alcohol
Apr 18, 2025
What if the stories we tell ourselves about alcohol are the very chains that bind us? In this blog post we’re going to explore the power of language in shaping drinking culture. We’ll unpack how changing our words can transform our habits, our identities, and ultimately, our lives.
The Power of Words and Stories
Here’s a fundamental truth: humans are natural storytellers. However, not all the stories we tell ourselves are beneficial. Words shape our perceptions, reinforcing beliefs about alcohol that may no longer serve us.
For many, alcohol has long been synonymous with fun, social connection, and relaxation. How have these deeply ingrained narratives influenced your life, where drinking has been central to your identity? What happens when we begin to question those narratives?
The Subconscious Influence of Language
Marketing and societal messages around alcohol often reinforce subconscious self-talk, making it seem as though alcohol is essential to enjoyment. Phrases like “happy hour” or “celebratory drinks” create implicit instructions, subtly reinforcing the idea that alcohol is necessary for happiness and connection.
One of the keys to transformation is reframing these messages: moving from seeing alcohol as a source of fun, to recognising the benefits of sobriety. Instead of focusing on “giving up” alcohol, shifting your mindset to see what you’re ‘gaining’ by going sober - more energy, deeper connections, and a clearer sense of self.
This shift is, of course, not always easy. Letting go of long-held beliefs about alcohol requires conscious effort and a willingness to sit with discomfort. Social situations that once felt natural can become challenging, and moments of self-doubt will inevitably creep in. But with time and practice, you may be able to learn to navigate these difficulties, ultimately discovering a more authentic and fulfilling way of living.
Rewriting the Narrative
In episode 62 of the Big Drink Rethink, Helen Packham, Speaker Coach and verbal communications strategist, shares her personal journey of transitioning away from alcohol and the challenges of reshaping her identity. She initially questioned who she was without drinking, realising that she had outsourced happiness to alcohol. Through self-development and conscious language shifts, she found new ways to experience joy and connection without relying on alcohol.
One of the most powerful takeaways from the episode is the importance of actively rewriting our personal narratives. Helen has embraced the sobriety-focused Instagram community, using social media to encourage others in their journeys. She emphasises the power of practice - continuously challenging internalised beliefs and consciously choosing new, empowering language.
